According to Time Magazine, the world has never seen the number of displaced people than there are right now. If the 59.5 million people forced to leave the country they call home formed their own nation, they would be the 24th largest country in the world. Time mentions the 1.77 million Syrian refugees and 1.59 million in Pakistan, but they failed to mention the ethnic cleansing happening as you read in the Dominican Republic.
In 2013, it was ruled that all children in the Dominican Republic born to Haitian immigrants as early as 1929 be stripped of their citizenship. This ruling is said to affect 250,000 Dominicans (even if they never set foot in Haiti in their lives) who were forced to register with the government or risk deportation to Haiti, the Dominican Republic’s neighbor on the island of Hispaniola. The deadline to do so was Wednesday and 300 of the quarter million had received their permits. It has been reported that Dominican authorities have organized buses and set up processing centers at the border of Haiti, a sign that there will be potential roundups of Haitian descendants.
Many are saying that this setting the table for “ethnic cleansing” through genocide. The term “ethnic cleansing” is often attributed to the Adolf Hitler’s Holocaust in which millions of Jews (and others) were placed into concentration camps and killed by the droves. The Dominican Republic is no stranger to such an event. The nation’s government carried out the “Parsley Massacre” in 1937, where President Rafael Trujillo ordered the execution of Haitians. Dominican soldiers would hold up a piece of parsley and as them what it was. Life and death depended on if the person rolled the “r” in the Spanish word for parsley, “perejil.”
There is not much news coverage on the ethnic cleansing in progress in the Dominican Republic. However, concerned social media users began spreading photos of dead bodies claiming that the genocide has already begun in the nation.
