Beginners Guide to Choosing The Ideal Cello Size
A cello is a wonderful instrument that is chosen with careful consideration to the player that possess it. Though seemingly menial, such a decision and detail should not be overlooked because it affects the performance of the player greatly.
As it is a large instrument, one size doesn’t fit all players unlike its smaller counterparts. Factors like comfortability, material, and projection are all necessary when deciding on which type and brand of cello suits you most. However, before considering all these details, one must ask oneself what size is most appropriate and practical for the player him/herself?
Cellos ranges from a 1/4 size all the way to a 4/4 size, the size of a cello is very custom and catered to the player who is using it. Besides your height and arm length, the ideal cello size for you is also dependent on the range of your skills.
- For kids with little experience (4-5 yr olds), the 1/10 size is most recommended. Furthermore, for kids who are around 5-7 years old, a 1/8 cello to ¼ is recommended.
- For the average young adult and adult beginners on the other hand, a ¾ size cello or a ½ size cello for 4 ½ feet-5 feet tall individuals is advisable. There is an exception for individuals that are more skillful and experienced however. Intermediaries may be able to take on 1/2 -1/4 cellos (though it is also highly dependent on their physical built).
- For taller individuals, intermediaries, and advanced players, a 4/4 cello should work fine though still depending on their height and other aforementioned factors.
It is important to note that arm length, hand size, and built are significant factors that are determining factors on the ideal size of cello for you.
In addition, in some cases, a 7/8 size exists for young adult and adult players who have difficulty in the range of a full-sized instrument or limited by his/her physical built.
