Today, Vallejo, California’s newest rap darling, Benny, drops his project Different, a 10-track look into the unwavering grit and wisdom he possesses at the young age of 20. The songs are real and often vulnerable, but even the coldest subject matters are presented atop warm melodies. On his most focused body of work, the mixed Black and Filipino rapper/singer encourages others to embrace being Different (November 30 via EMPIRE).
“The only limits are the ones you set for yourself,” Benny proclaims. It’s a mantra he’s used to get himself out the mud. Benny’s faced and overcome his share of adversity — from his dad’s stints behind bars, living out of a car after his mom kicked him out, strained relationships with his siblings, and utilities being shut off, just to scratch the surface. He channeled these experiences into his music, rapping candidly on 2017’s “What Time It Is,” (2M views), and the recently released fourth track on Different, “You Don’t Know,” (24,000 views in three days). True to his 2018 album title, his creative risk-taking is often Dangerous, especially as a figure in the street.
