Once again, the power of the camera phone during police altercations proves effective. On Friday, a video of a Boston police officer using force against a defenseless woman on a bus was uploaded to Youtube. According to the video’s description, the woman was being detained for “alleged petty theft.” However, the police officer treated the woman as though the unarmed had just committed a mass shooting. He wrestles with the woman and strikes her several times.
The situation escalates when the officer draws his service weapon, but the other passengers on the bus weren’t having it. Several passengers had their camera phones recording the incident, and were advising the woman to “chill.” When he drew his gun, though some naturally ran, there were brave passengers who stayed on and demanded that the officer put his gun away. Eventually, the officer listened to them and holstered his weapon. Other officers then boarded the bus and the woman was finally handcuffed and taken into custody.
This video shows us a few things. As mentioned before, it shows that pulling out your camera and recording the police as they interact with suspects is valuable. It may just save a life, as officers are aware that their actions are being documented and will be broadcast to the world immediately. Another thing the video shows is that the brutality and excessive force is not a monopoly that White police officers own. The cop in this video is Black. It shows that all police officers have been trained and conditioned to go hard on Black suspects.
