We’ve seen crime bosses escape from the hospital before. Not long before his re-arrest, global drug kingpin El Chapo escaped from the hospital after he was in a car accident. while El Chapo likely used bribes and craftiness to elude the laws, another foreign kingpin used muscle to escape the clutches of the authorities last week.
His name is Nicolas Labre Pereira de Jesus, better known as “Fat Family.” he is the organized crime boss of the Morro de Santo Amaro favela, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. He comes from a drug trafficking family, including his brother Marco Antonio Pereira Firmino da Silva, who preceded him as the premier gangster in Santo Amaro. Fat Family has a number of arrests on his record for for everything from drug dealing to murder.
Wounded during a shootout, Fat Family was captured by Rio de Janeiro state police on June 13. FOX News Latino elaborates:
Taken to Souza Aguiar municipal hospital for treatment, Fat Family escaped during an assault by more than 20 masked men armed with grenades and assault rifles.
Another patient at the hospital died in the attack, while a paramedic and an off-duty police officer were wounded.
The violence also caused damage to specialized equipment at the hospital, which is near Maracana stadium – venue for the Olympic inaugural and closing ceremonies – and one of the five designated medical facilities for the Games.
According to reports, the attack was made known to the authorities beforehand during intercepted phone telephone conversations. In reaction, the state police unleashed 30 of its 42 battalions on Rio to bring Fat Family back in. This will be no easy job, as it’s believed the boss is being protected by Comando Vermelho, “Brazil’s largest criminal organization, with an estimated 50,000 members.”
