If you don’t know, security at any airport tends to be top notch. Unless the plan is well thought out, attempts to smuggle any contraband on a plane is oftentimes thwarted by airport personnel. Nevertheless, people still try it. Some of the attempts are borderline comical. One such incident happened on June 18 at Barcelona–El Prat Josep Tarradellas Airport in Spain. A Colombian man was caught trying to smuggle half a kilo of cocaine by hiding it…in his toupee.
The 65-year-old man was flying from Bogota, Colombia to Barcelona. Unbeknownst to him, the plane he was on was subject to extra security checks, which is common practice for flights coming out of countries known for drug trafficking. Agents became suspicious of him when his head appeared abnormally big under his hat. He was also acting nervous, according to reports. He was taken in upon landing and searched. When they checked his head, they discovered that it appeared so huge because he had a half kilo (1.1 pounds) of coke glued to his head under his toupee. “His toupee was very curious but the agents there are experts,” a spokesperson for the Policía Nacional said.
The law enforcement agency said in a statement: “Performing routine controls on arrival flights considered ‘hot,’ the officers detained a Colombian citizen from Bogotá [Colombia] who had the appearance of a tourist on first impression but later attracted their attention due to his notable nervousness and the disproportionate size of the toupee he wore.”
The statement further reads: “When proceeding with his identification, officers saw that underneath his hat, he was wearing a wig that because of its size prompted suspicions he could be hiding an illegal substance underneath it.”
The man was charged with public health crimes.
