As the world waits to see what will happen to world-class drug lord Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman, he has made a change in his legal representation. According to reports, Chapo has hired attorney Jeffrey Lichtman, who successfully defended John Gotti, Jr., son of the “Dapper Don” John Gotti.
According to The Guardian, El Chapo has also hired three other attorneys for his trial:
The lawyer, Jeffrey Lichtman, said Guzman had hired him along with three others – Marc Fernich, who has also represented Gotti’s son, John Gotti, Jr; William Purpura, who represented a Baltimore drug kingpin, Richard Wilford; and Eduardo Balarezo, who represented Alfredo Beltrán Leyva, the head of another Mexican drug cartel.
Wilford and Beltrán Leyva were convicted and received long prison sentences.
El Chapo was previously represented by public defenders, who tried to get his charges dismissed. They claim that “he should not have been sent to New York, because Mexican authorities were told he was being arrested on charges filed in California and Texas.”
Chapo’s newly acquired legal team have not yet appeared in court, because they want to make sure prosecutors will not seize their legal fees, according to a letter filed on Monday. Lichtman says that issue has not yet been resolved.
