The prison escape and evasion of law enforcement by drug lord Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán was the stuff of legend. He slipped out of a hospital right before cops came after a car accident. He juked the Mexican marines. He fell off a cliff. It all came to an end a few months ago, when the feds finally caught up to him. However, recent reports indicate that while the laws of the world were on his tail, the Sinaloa king slipped into the United States twice.
This information come from El Chapo’s daughter, Rosa Isela Guzmán Ortiz. According to her, the cartel boss “escaped capture with the help of corrupt Mexican officials and evaded U.S. Border Patrol to sneak into California,” not too long after his infamous interview with actor Sean Penn for Rolling Stone. She didn’t dish on where he stayed in SoCal, but said that he dropped off some bread and paid her a visit at the five-bedroom crib he bought for her and her four children. “My dad deposited the money in a bank account with a lawyer and a while after he came to see the house, his house. He came twice,” said Guzmán Ortiz.
Guzmán Ortiz said she doesn’t know the specifics of how her father arrived in the US, but implied that he allegedly bribed high-level Mexican officials. She said, “All I know is that my dad told his lawyer to deliver some checks to [a politician’s] campaign, and asked that he respect him.”
These claims cannot be independently verified. Customs and Border Protection spokeswoman Jacqueline Wasiluk says there’s “no information that substantiates the claims in news reports.”
Guzmán Ortiz’s may shed more light on why El Chapo is so adamant about being extradited to the US. Maybe he wants to be close to his daughter.
