Behind every powerful man, there’s a woman holding him down. The woman behind incarcerated drug lord Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman is his wife, former beauty queen and American citizen, Emma Coronel Aispura. Coronel met El Chapo in 2007, when she was only 17. The next year, she was married to the biggest boss this generation has seen. In 2011, she gave birth to El Chapo’s twin daughters in Lancaster, CA. She was with Chapo in 2014, when he was busted in the Mexican resort town of Mazatlan. Nowadays with her husband behind bars awaiting possible extradition, Coronel is making sure El Chapo is good.
Since his arrest, it’s been reported that El Chapo is under heavy security. However, his legal team claims that the Sinaloa Cartel commander is being tortured. Coronel has voiced her concerns for her husband’s well-being in the joint. “They want to make him pay for his escape,” she told Spanish-language broadcaster Telemunda in February, concerning his stay at Altiplano prison in Mexico. Recently, Coronel has spent several days in Washington, DC (where she has been followed by government agents), campaigning for her husband’s humanity. During her time in the Nation’s Capital, she met with the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights. Though the organization kept its lips sealed about the meeting, Chapo’s attorney,, Andres Granados, revealed that the point of Coronel’s meeting was “to file a petition with human rights commission and to seek an investigation into the conditions of his imprisonment in Mexico.”
As reported, El Chapo was transferred out of Altiplano to a facility in Juarez, due to safety concerns.
