The trial for the alleged world’s biggest drug lord, Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman, for drug trafficking and money laundering is slated to next month on November 5 in Brooklyn. If you’ll remember, he was extradited from Mexico to the United States last year after being captured following his brazen second escape from prison. One aspect of the case that made headlines a few months ago is that the authorities cannot find one dime of the supposed billions of dollars Chapo allegedly made through distributing cocaine and other drugs around the world. However, evidence of his wealth has been shown often by his wife and former teenage beauty queen, Emma Coronel Aispuro on social media over the past few months.
In posts made to a few Instagram accounts, Coronel Aispuro can be seen flossing in highly fashionable items, such as designer dresses, shoes and Prada handbags. She has also posted pictures of herself on vacation, rocking a skimpy bikini on the beaches of Los Cabos. One of her stunts that hit headlines was an extravagant Barbie-themed birthday party she threw for her and Chapo’s seven-year-old twin daughters, Emaly and Maria Joaquina, on Chapo’s turf in Culiacan, Sinaloa. The party featured “grand arcs made of pink and white balloons” as well as “a three-tiered pink birthday cake, Barbie-themed menus and party hats,” according to the NY Post.

Coronel Aispuro also took upon herself to create an official, now-deleted Instagram page for El Chapo with the handle @joaquinguzmanoficial. Launched in August, the page had close to 30,000 followers and four posts. The bio section reads (in Spanish), “Everyone knows my power and my history. Follow me, I’m at the wheel.” One of the photos features El Chapo wearing a suit and holding a candle with the caption, “It is not the height, nor the weight, nor the muscles, nor the beauty that make you a great person. It’s the heart and the humility.”
According to The Daily Mail, everyone in Mexico isn’t happy about Coronel Aispuro flaunting El Chapo’s wealth online. According to the report, “Some Mexicans reacted with fury after news of the lavish birthday party emerged as they accused the former beauty queen of using ‘blood money’ from her 61-year-old husband’s drug empire.” In addition to his drug trafficking and money laundering, El Chapo is also accused of being responsible for thousands of deaths.
When it comes to El Chapo’s missing money, a federal law enforcement source, “There is no political will in Mexico to seize El Chapo’s or any other drug trafficker’s assets in the country.” According to the source, Chapo’s family has access to “hundreds of millions” of dollars in cash, real estate and other holdings.
Surely, many will be tuned in when El Chapo’s trial starts next month.
