Mr. F-A-B-O, Brooklyn rapper Fabolous, discretely took an out of town trip to Medellin, Colombia. The trip was initiated to shoot a music video in the beautiful country, but the city of Medellin did not necessarily welcome the great MC with open arms. Shortly after arriving in the city did Fabolous experience one of the stigmas Medellin has to offer. During the commute from the airport to the hotel, two gunmen on a scooter approached Fab with an attempt to rob him and his team at gunpoint. The driver ran the delinquents off the road, knocking them off the scooter, so he could safely escape and take Fab to safety.
But Fab isn’t the only one facing incidents of this stature when entering Medellin. Rick Ross had his issues in the past as well with the city of Medellin. During his music video shoot for “All I Want is You,” featuring The Dream, there are allegations of Rozay being extorted during his video shoot. The video was partially filmed on a private finca (estate), and partially in the urban areas of Medellin, known as Las Comunas de Medellin. One of his crew members was forcefully taken into an apartment against his will to negotiate prices. Permission was given, and his safety and well being was guaranteed while filming in Las Comunas, all in exchange for currency. And to get even deeper into what the streets of Medellin are talking, before the extortion was initiated, a few sicarios from Medellin were already plotting to kidnap and hold Ross for ransom. But nothing is personal because due to it being early in Ross’ career the media had confused the rapper with the actor Mr. T, known for his work on the show, the A-Team.
The city of Medellin is not impressed with celebrity status, social standing, or riches. Upon entering Medellin with a haughty, gaudy demeanor, you will be looked at simply as a meal ticket. The city of Medellin has no respect for your importance in a culture or your level of prestige. It is a city where presidential candidates, journalists, lawyers, and judges have all been victims. The city doesn’t condemn in regards of egos or who is the toughest because the biggest bosses have fallen victims to the city. Crime boss Griselda Blanco was assassinated in the city, her hometown, at the age of 69. She was condemned for the actions of her past; the city never forgets nor forgives. 50 Cent was well aware of the dangers and ordered for five to six Toyota Land Cruisers filled with security escorts to protect him during his visit. Even most trusted sicario of Pablo Escobar (Medellin’s most famous son), John Jairo Velasquez (a.k.a. “Popeye”), who was recently released from prison, still maneuvers in caution throughout the city. He stated in a recent interview that he has no social life, does not attend nightclubs, and is never inebriated. These actions are applied because he must be aware at all times of his surroundings. Popeye is conscious that anyone can fall victim to the city of Medellin.
Good thing Fab made it out of there un-yapped and alive!
