A father and son tandem from Texas kicked the new year off with a bang. Instead of having a few drinks and hitting up a parade or get together or watching sports like most people, Edward and Eric Campbell went on a murderous interstate crime spree ending in their arrest after a shootout with police.
To start their marathon of crime, the Campbells allegedly killed retired couple, Jerome Faulkner, 73, and his wife, Dora, 62 in their Oxford, NC home on New Year’s Day. After murdering the couple, Edward and Eric Campbell set fire to the house and loaded the corpses into a pickup truck before driving away.
A few hours later, police in West Virginia pulled Eric Campbell over in a stolen SUV about 200 miles away from the scene of the murder. Not too long after, Edward Campbell drove up and starting firing a gun at the officers as they questioned his son. 16-year veteran of the Lewiston, W.Va. police force, Lt. Jeromy Dover was grazed in the back of the neck and Patrolman Nicholas Sams, a rookie fresh out of training, was hit in the face with shrapnel. Due to the minor injuries, the officers were able to return fire and strike Edward Campbell in the leg.
Eric Campbell fled in the SUV, abandoned it and proceeded on foot before being apprehended. He was pictured with two black eyes in his mugshot. Police searched the pickup truck and found the bodies of the murdered Faulkners.
In West Virginia, Edward and Eric Campbell face charges of assault and attempted murder. It is certain that there are more charges coming for the crime of killing the Faulkners in North Carolina.
