Harlem Teacher Busted For Having Seven Pounds Of The Date Rape Drug, GHB, Delivered To His Home

Nowadays, people will not hesitate to order illegal drugs and have them mailed to their homes. With all the stories of these type of plans going awry, having drugs sent through the mail remains one of the more popular, secure methods for delivery. Yesterday, a Harlem high school teacher found out the hard way that having drugs (especially large amounts) of drugs mailed to your spot is not always a good idea. This case is more disturbing than getting some weed or edibles sent in the mail, though.

Steven Rich, 51, has been a teacher at Thurgood Marshall Academy in Harlem for a decade. However, his career might be done for, now, since he was arrested after police raided his apartment W. 34th Street in Hell’s Kitchen on Tuesday. According to the NY Daily News, police got a tip that Rich was slated to receive a shipment of narcotics.

When all was said and done, a search of Rich’s apartment yielded seven pounds of Gamma-Hydroxybutyrate or GHB. This drug comes in liquid form and is commonly used as a date rape drug. The police have deemed the amount of GHB that Rich had to be a felony-level offense. It is not reported whether he was selling the drugs or if he was out here giving it to women.

As far as Rich’s future as an educator, city Education Department spokesman Douglas Cohen said, “Mr. Rich’s alleged actions betray the trust of students and families, and he was immediately reassigned away from the classroom pending the outcome of the criminal matter.”
