Nobody will be punished for the killing of Ohio father of two John Crawford III in a Wal-Mart in Beavercreek, OH at the hands of the town’s police. Someone called the police on Crawford who was walking around the store with a pellet gun from off the shelves. Police responded, ran in the Wal-Mart and shot Crawford to death who was on the phone with his children’s mother at the time. She listened as he tried to tell the police that the gun he was holding was a toy, but they unloaded on Crawford, killing him. A woman also died as a result of the mayhem afterwards.
While police were told John Crawford III was waving the gun around and pointing it at people, the newly released security video show something different. Crawford appeared to just be walking around the store as he split from his girlfriend whom he was accompanying. In fact, a man who called 9-1-1 later said that Crawford never shouldered the gun or pointed it at anyone. However, after a two day proceeding earlier this week, a grand jury found that the officers’ actions were justified.
Though there will be no criminal charges, John Crawford III’s family can still file a civil lawsuit for the killing. The Washington Post reports that Crawford’s family said in a statement, “The Wal-Mart surveillance video and eyewitnesses prove that the killing of John H. Crawford III was not justified and was not reasonable. It is undisputed that John Crawford III was in Wal-Mart as a customer and was not posing a threat to anyone in the store, especially the police officers.”
The Justice Department vows to “conduct an independent review of the facts and circumstances” to investigate whether any civil rights violations happened.
