There are very few people in the world who can tell you why the Bloods and Crips are beefing. For decades, blood has been shed by both sides on the streets of California, but the ones who can tell you who caught the first body and why are either dead or locked away forever. Nevertheless, people have been trying for the longest to try to get the two factions to cool out and stop the violence. Where social workers, law enforcement and others have failed, Compton emcee, Kendrick Lamar believes he holds the answer with his new sneakers to be released by Reebok on July 18th.
Kendrick Lamar has appeared in several Reebok ads already, but he plans to take things to the next level with the release of his Reebok Ventilators. Rappers have had sneaker deals since Run DMC signed a monumental endorsement with Adidas in the 80’s. Jay Z and 50 Cent released their signature Reebok sneakers in the early 2000’s and other rappers have followed suit, with Kanye West being the latest with his Yeezy Boosts with Adidas. Kendrick’s sneakers are the first to have a social element to them. The off-white, suede Ventilators will feature blue accents on one and red on the other to represent both the Bloods and Crips. Each tongue on the sneakers are inscribed with the word “Neutral” on them to promote peace between the gangs. They will sell for around $150.
Kendrick Lamar is on a winning streak with his critically acclaimed sophomore album, ‘To Pimp A Butterfly,” and video for the single, “Be Alright.” Can his new sneaks bring about a ceasefire on the streets of California? It’s quite a noble task to take up.
