The more outraged citizens demonstrate their disgust with the violent actions of law enforcement that many consider to be excessive force, the more police seem to keep doing he same thing. Yet again, the LAPD is the culprit of yet another killing of an unarmed man. This time, the victim was a homeless man outside of a Skid Row homeless shelter.
The homeless man, known as “Africa” or “Brother Africa” did appear unruly as LAPD officers as they tried to arrest him near the Union Rescue Mission in Los Angeles. The man, suspected of robbery, started flailing his arms at officers as they tried to apprehend him. One of the officers tased him and he was taken to the ground. When it seemed that the man was subdued, an officer appears to yell out, “Drop the gun!” Shortly after, shots ring out and the man laid on the ground lifeless.
There was a crowd gathered by the scene and one of the onlookers decided to film the LAPD as they dealt with the situation. As the officers swarmed the man, it appears that a woman ran up and took one of the officers’ batons. At that point, she was tackled and handcuffed.
Anthony Blackburn was the bystander that filmed the incident. He told CNN affiliate KABC-TV, “I had my phone out, you know, videotaping the whole thing ’cause we’ve been hearing on the news about police brutality. I just wanted to film it and just make sure everything was all right. But I ended up seeing a tragedy.”
