For many, completion of high school may not seem like that big a deal. However, if you check your privilege at the door, you may feel some sympathy for folks who did not finish high school for whatever reason. Chicago rapper Lil’ Bibby was one of those people. In Chiraq, the high school graduation rate for Black males is a little over half at 58.6%, according to data compiled in the Black Boys Report by the Schott Foundation for Public Education. This rate pretty much runs parallel to the national average of 59%.
Bibby addressed this in an interview with Sway Calloway on Sway In the Morning on Shade 45 last year. “None of my homies don’t go to school” Bibby told Sway and Heather B. “I’m from the streets, so you know, it be too much shit going on. Then when you start making that little drug money or whatever, you just look at school, like, I’m wasting my time here.”
He also told the hosts that he had 19 credits completed, one shy of the requirement needed to graduate high school. Sway and Heather B urged Bibby to get his GED, offering a reward of a party and dinner. Bibby did just that, passing with straight A’s in March of this year. Yesterday, the 19-year-old drill artist announced that he went all the way with his high school graduation on Instagram. He posted a photo of himself smiling and holding his diploma from Liberty High School in Brattleboro, VT. He also expressed an interest in pursuing a college education at UCLA.
CONGRATULATIONS TO LIL’ BIBBY! We, at Don Diva wish him the best and urge him to continue being an example to young men and women like him. Check out the photo and the Sway In The Morning interview below:
