On his street classic, “Come And Get Me” off the Vol. 3…Life and Times of S. Carter album, hip-hop icon Jay Z opened with the line, “I’ll remove ya roof, homie. Let the sun shine in.” Now, while we hold this line as one of Jay’s finer lyrical moments, we never stop to think about those who have their “roofs” removed. Evidenced by a story coming out of Putnam County, FL, life is hard for the roofless people, as one was recently caught burglarizing survival equipment.
A trucker was staying at the Putnam County Economy Inn, as he was apparently getting ready to go on (or coming back from) an outdoors adventure. He heard noises coming from his truck, and went out to investigate. He saw a man, with no scalp, rummaging through his truck. The man, identified as Tommie Bennett, 62, fled on his bicycle, carrying the trucker’s tackle box, tent and a fishing pole. The trucker gave chase, caught up to Bennett, wrestled him to the ground and tied him up, while he waited for police to arrive. The police came and found Bennett to be in possession of a pocketful of Viagara pills. He did not have a prescription for them.
According to Sunday World, Bennett’s mugshot online, showing him minus a scalp, cause a public stir, as people thought that police beat him to the white meat (as Bernie Mac would say). Sunday World cleared up those rumors, saying:
Bennett’s mugshot caused controversy online due to his extensive scalp injuries, but Putnam County Sheriff’s Office said that the man “evidently” had a skin condition.
Bennett racked up a number of charges, including “burglary of a conveyance, larceny and possession of a new legend drug without a prescription.” There have been no reports explaining why Bennett’s “roof” was missing.
