Hip hop industry mover and shaker Yandy Smith caught a lot of criticism on social media when she married Mendeecees Harris on a special episode of VH1’s Love & Hip Hop New York. Many felt that she was tripping for marrying Mendeecees (also a hip-hop industry administrator and owner of the Beat Box Factory studio in the Bronx) because he had just been convicted on federal drug trafficking charges with reports of a potential sentence of up to 40 years behind bars. After Tuesday’s sentencing hearing, it doesn’t look like yandy will have to wait as long as naysayers were expecting.
Mendeecees was sentenced to 97 months (eight years and change) in federal prison yesterday for his role in a dope peddling conspiracy that moved millions in cocaine and heroin from downstate New York to the Rochester area, according to Democrat & Chronicle. Mendeecees made a heartfelt plea in the courtroom, apologizing “for any trouble I have caused the city of Rochester.” Democrat & Chronicle reports:
At sentencing, Harris, 37, said he grew up fatherless in a tough neighborhood and stepped into the drug trade. But he said his children — he has four — have been his recent motivation to now stay away from crime.
“Ever since (having children), I’ve been trying to right my wrongs,” he told U.S. District Judge Frank Geraci Jr. at the sentencing.
Yandy was present during the proceedings along with the couple’s 10-month-old daughter, Skylar. It is unknown if the Love & Hip Hop crew will make its way to the bing to film Mendeecees for any upcoming episodes.
