President Obama appeared in an Funny Or Die’s “Between Two Ferns” serial yesterday, and traffic to HealthCare.gov skyrocketed. The sit-down with Mr. President and host Zach Galifianakis solidified President Obama’s reach and influence to young American adults. The two men took shots at each other’s careers, but the appearance was really tailored to promote HealthCare.gov and other channels Americans can use to take advantage of the Affordable Care Act- a fact the segment was very upfront about: “Here we go. Okay, let’s get this out of the way. What did you come here to plug?” asks Galifianakis.
Obama handles his question tactfully: “I wouldn’t be with you here today if I didn’t have something to plug.” He goes on to mention the website, the phone number, and the potential for in-person Obamacare registration. The resulting traffic to HealthCare.gov broke records. The video aired at 7 a.m. ET, and by 1 p.m. the ACA site had received 19,000 referral visits from funnyordie.com, Politico reports. By 6 p.m. that number had nearly doubled at 32,000 unique visits.
It’s a brilliant PR move for the president and for the ACA, which nears its March 31 enrollment deadline. It’s also very, very funny. We’d love to see the bloopers.
