With all of the happenings being seen concerning Ferguson, MO, and the militarization of police there, it could be said that a precedent has been set. The cops feel they need to be strapped with army guns to keep the peace. In Compton, CA, this practice of bringing law and order will make its way to the hallways of local schools. According to The Atlantic, the Compton School District has voted to arm campus police with AR-15 assault rifles.
The Compton police union implies that Compton Schools are just one of a few school districts doing this (even though there are highly armed police forces nearby):
Currently, the following School Districts authorize their Police Officers to deploy these weapons; Los Angeles School PD, Baldwin Park School PD, Santa Ana School PD, Fontana School PD, San Bernandino School PD.
The union goes on to defend the move saying:
If we encounter an active mass murderer on campus with a rifle or body armor, our officers may not adequately be prepared to stop that suspect. School Police Officers will undergo a training course, followed by a shooting proficiency test on a firing range and a written exam. The rifles are designed for increased accuracy and use rifled ammunition than can pierce body armor. The safety of our Students, Staff, and Parents are very important to us.
The Compton campus police are scheduled to be trained and armed with new AR-15’s within a month.
