As if enough things weren’t happening in New York City this past weekend, Kanye West put on his long anticipated Adidas Fashion Show. Kanye’s fashion designer story started way back before any of us knew who he was but on paper, you could say it started back in 2008 when he inked a deal with Nike. The deal allowed him to design two shoes over 4 years. He designed and dropped the Air Yeezy 1 in 2009 and then the Air Yeezy 2 in 2012. However, that wasn’t enough for Kanye as he wanted to design everything from jackets to shirts to school uniforms. Unable to get this done at Nike, he linked up with Adidas at the end of 2013. Now, here we are at the beginning of 2015 and the Kanye x Adidas collaboration has finally arrived. Here is a recap of Kanye West’s Adidas Fashion Show.
Exactly a week before the actual runway show, the world got a first look at Kanye’s Adidas shoes. This is by far the most exciting part about his Adidas line and something everyone has been waiting for since the Air Yeezy 2 dropped back in 2012. Even though he wants us to be known as the new “Ralph Lauren”, he will always be known for making incredibly innovative sneakers so naturally, that will be the most hyped part of the new line. The shoes all called the Yeezy Boost. It is a collection of 4 different shoes all following the same silhouette and colorway. They come in “highs” or “lows” as well as black or greyish/white. Check out the picture below for all 4 versions. Like what you see? Too bad. They are already all sold out.
On top of the sneakers, Kanye unveiled his entire clothing line to a lucky 400 people at an upscale warehouse in NYC. These lucky people obviously being the upper echelon of the urban/fashion/hip-hop world. Did Kanye simply call these 400 people and invite them personally? Of course not. He mailed out vacuum sealed windbreakers with the address and time stitched on the arm. Didn’t get a windbreaker mailed to your house? No sweat. Kanye streamed the fashion show at 50 movie theatres across the globe so even if you aren’t Alexander Wang, Jay-Z, Beyonce, Rihanna or Anna Wintour, you would still be able to watch fashion history.
Now, to the actual clothes. The line is officially titled Yeezy Season 1. There were roughly 50 individual “looks” at the show but each look featured a bunch of unique pieces all ready-to-wear for Fall 2015. The clothes come in men’s, women’s and what looks to be unisex. Everything from trendy oversized sweaters to skintight unitards made the final cut for the show. Some pieces, like the elongated fur coats and sleek army vests looked surprisingly practical on someone other than Kanye, proving that some pieces could potentially be worn a lot by the masses (if they are affordable). However, other pieces like the brown, white and red female unitards and minimal “sports” bras look strange, even for a fashion show. It’s unclear whether they will be targeted for high fashionistas or your everyday gym-goer. Check a few looks below and let us know what you think.
Amidst all the new threads, Kanye actually debuted a new song off his upcoming album during the concluding minutes of the fashion show. The track is called “Wolves” and features Sia and Vic Mensa. Some are saying it was the best part about his entire Adidas release but we will let you decide that for yourself. Check the song in the video below and as always, let us know what you think in the comments or on Twitter!
