Today on The Bandwagon, we find ourselves in the Dirty District of Washington, DC, yet again. This time, we’re paying Redhead, a veteran emcee representing Northwest by way of Capitol Heights, MD. As a welcoming gift, he has blessed us with his new track “The Glow,” as he readies his debut EP, Exxxactly.
For a little background on Redhead, he’s been grinding as an underground artist on the DC circuit since around 2002. He was always special. Though he could not speak words until he was 2-years-old, he was advanced intellectually, and went on to skip a grade in school. He studied the musical stylings of legendary acts, such as A Tribe Called Quest, Wu-Tang Clan, Cash Money Clique, DMX, Outkast, and tried to emulate them in rhymes that he only spit to himself. He stepped out on faith and showed what he had to offer lyrically to an A&R for MCA Records in 2002 at the age of 17 and was so impressive, the label wanted to sign him. His parents weren’t down with the situation, so he never signed, but he decided to take rapping seriously. Since, he has flourished, opening for many prominent artists in the game and even performing in BET’s “Campus Invasion Tour,” with his “witty, buppy, backpacker floetics.” Furthermore, you can hear his voice on The Russ Parr Morning Show on DC’s 93.9 WKYS Kiss FM.
“The Glow” is a smooth offering, suitable for cruising on a laid back, sunny day or sitting back and blowing some loud to. Laced with production by Malik “FireArcher” Hunter, Redhead melodically yet methodically floats on the track, speaking that real about life. The Outkast influence is definitely demonstrated all throughout, as well as a touch of Devin the Dude. A listen will definitely leave you wanting more. If this is any barometer of what Exxxactly will be like, Redhead has some fire on his hands.
