14 members of a car theft ring operating from Washington, DC to Mongomery and Prince George’s counties in Maryland known as “Simple City” have been indicted on serious federal racketeering charges. The theft ring that they are accused of running has reportedly raked in $5 million since its start in 2009. Simple City is accused of stealing and selling cars, electronics and guns. They also stand accused of fraud and identity theft with stolen credit cards and checkbooks, as well as armed robberies of businesses and ATM’s. It is believed that they are behind more than 100 car thefts in Price George’s County over the past two years.
According to U.S Attorney Rod J. Rosenstein, Simple City started out with simple “hop-in” vehicle thefts saying, “They would wait for a victim to park the car at a gas station or convenience store and leave the keys in the car and the defendants would then jump in and steal the car.” Court documents indicate that Simple City sold personal identification information and debit/credit cards to a subgroup led by Sylvia Price. Price’s group then used the information and cards to commit wire fraud, credit card fraud and aggravated identity theft. Price would then kick money back to Jeff “Fro” Crews to be dispensed among active Simple City members.
140 law enforcement officers from four federal, state and local executed 11 search warrants and arrested seven Simple City participants. Two were already in custody and five remain at large. Each member faces 20 years in prison if convicted.
