So Much For That: Major Mail Bust Of Weed And Other Contraband

For years now, folks from places with legal, loud have been turning to the post office to deliver weed to folks in other states. Senders vacuum-sealed bags of buds, put them in an inconspicuous package, boxed it up with food or other items, used a fake return address or name and let it rip. This method, although carrying potential federal charges, was seen as a better alternative to UPS or FedEx, where employees are likely to open and snag packages. A recent case coming out of Central NY is an indicator that law enforcement is hip to this tactic. There are 22 people in all facing charges for receiving weed and other illegal items through the mail.

Starting on March 28, certain packages, at the Central New York Postal Sorting Center in North Syracuse, were marked as “suspicious” due to “undisclosed methods.” They were then brought to police dogs, who alerted handlers if an illegal substance was detected. Federal search warrants were then obtained to search the packages.

More than 80 pounds of weed (mailed from inside New York State, California, Indiana, Oregon and Washington) was discovered, along with smaller amounts of other drugs, such as hash oil, hallucinogenic mushrooms, Xanax, MDMA, cocaine, heroin, LSD and synthetic drugs. , The four kilos of synthetic drugs are suspected of coming from China and India. Additionally, “nearly 8,400 doses of pharmaceuticals and counterfeit Nike sneakers,” along with firearms and $160,000 cash were snagged.

According to Syracuse.com:

Police also entered the homes of the packages’ intended recipients and seized the cash and weapons. A 2006 Mercedes Benz 280 was also seized.

Nine of the 22 suspects are from Syracuse, four are from Utica, and the rest are from Central New York and elsewhere, according to the news release.

The people who mailed the packages are sill sought.

“To any criminal thinking of using the postal service to deliver these .. dangerous drugs, expect more of these types of operations,” said New York State Police Maj. David Krause. “This case speaks to the incredible inter-agency coordination and cooperation that it takes to get drugs off the streets.”
