The police slayings failed to be curbed during this year’s tumultuous month of August. A whole revolutionary movement started early in the month in Ferguson, MO in response to the various instances of unarmed Black men being killed by the cops. The month went out with a literal bang with yet another killing, this time at the hands of officers from the Chicago Police Department. The victim was 19-year-old Roshad McIntosh. Sympathizers banded together behind McIntosh’s mother as they marched through the streets of “The Chi.”
The tragic incident was one of two different police-involved shooting deaths in Chicago early last week. McIntosh’s story differs from Mike Brown’s in Ferguson due to the fact that officers were responding to a call about armed men standing on a Lawndale block (Brown was accosted for walking in the street). This is probably a call that gang unit gets often Chicago’s war-torn West Side. Nevertheless, when they arrived, the officers spotted two men who allegedly “fit the description” of the men they were called about. McIntosh was one of them. Officers gave chase when McIntosh started to run away. When he reached a stairway behind an apartment building, he allegedly drew a gun on the officers. Officers claim they fired on him when he refused to drop it.
However, McIntosh’s mother, Cynthia Lane, claims the police still haven’t given her an explanation, personally. Yesterday, Lane went to the precinct to ask question and find out which officer killed her son. She was given no information. She came out of the precinct in tears in front of a gathering of supporters like so many in the unfortunate sorority of Black women whose sons have been the prey of police/vigilantes. In the days preceding, about 500 disgruntled Chicagoans took to the streets in a march in protest.
Reportedly, protests against police killings are a rare occurrence in Chicago. The people obviously see something amiss with this one. Granted, their mission will be hard. McIntosh does have a criminal history having been booked into the Cook County Jail. His only available record shows recent arrests for domestic battery in April, theft in February as well as a controlled substance charge in August of 2012. Mike Brown has been painted as a goon by the Ferguson police and he was headed to college. Remember though, Victor White III is accused of shooting himself in the back while handcuffed in the backseat of a police cruiser.
