THE BANDWAGON: Adrien – Don’t F#@$ Up The Commas
When Future’s “Fuck Up Some Commas” drops in the club, expect the ratchets to get ratchet as they party to the “get money anthem” of 2015. As with every popular song of the day, it is expected for other rappers to snatch up the instrumental and put their spin on it. I was pleasantly surprised when I stumbled across this “Commas” freestyle by Queens rapper, Adrien. I wasn’t surprised that his “Don’t F#@$ Up The Commas” freestyle was blazing hot fire, like when Left Eye burned down Andre Rison’s mansion. I was surprised to see this rapper back in action. Fans of underground hip-hop may remember Adrien by his former moniker, A. Pinks. It’s been a minute.
Where most freestyles done to this beat are about the frivolous exploits of the average emcee trying to get on, Adrien has taken the opportunity to encourage the younger generations to pursue their education in order to become a success in the real world. Education is clearly important to Adrien (rapping under his Elevator Music imprint), because he mentions having attended Howard University, one of the nation’s premier historically Black colleges/universities (HBCUs). The title is an allusion to using correct grammar, but this isn’t any Weird Al Yankovich shit. It’s more like an old head imparting wisdom to the youngins on the corner. “Future’s ‘Commas’ was so well executed, it made me consider trapping,” Adrien said jokingly. “The climate of music is so “pro-hustle,” it made me want to speak my truth.”
He continued, “Education is the gateway to wealth. There’s a secret society of scholars running the world and no invitations are handed out. They won’t even let you know a party is taking place, but you can crash it.”
A rhyme like this is right on time, and Adrien’s prowess as a seasoned flame spitter floats over the hypnotic beat. A good message and quality delivery will get you shine on The Bandwagon every time. Props to Adrien, for this. Looking forward to seeing/hearing more. DON’T FUCK UP THE COMMAS, KIDS!
