Oftentimes, someone will take to social media to “leak nudes.” This is the act of releasing naked pictures or videos of someone online, most of the time without the consent of the person pictured. It is more common for a woman’s nude pictures or videos to be released than a man’s. This is legally referred to as “revenge porn.” Some view revenge porn as psychological or domestic abuse.
Whenever leaked nudes grab the attentions of social media users, the question of whether it is legal or not. Revenge porn is outlawed nationally in countries like Japan, the Philippines and Canada, but laws against it are restricted to 26 states in the United States. Through its “End Revenge Porn” initiative, the Cyber Civil Rights Initiative (CCRI) has released a complete list of states with revenge porn laws on the books.
