There should be no religion in schools

There should be no religion in schools

Experts with progressive thinking believe that modern students do not need lessons on religion. The thing is that official beliefs, like other tools, become morally obsolete with time. And if spiritual teachings are not modernized for current needs, they bring more harm than good. Let’s find out why people stop believing in God and why studying religion in educational institutions ceases to be relevant.

1. Jesus Christ was not the only Messiah

As it turned out, the history of the Messiah is as old as the world. For thousands of years, there was a savior in the mythology of each of the cultures. Skeptics even argue that the image of the Christian savior is based on all these heroes: Horus, Attis, Dionysus, Krishna, Mithra, Orpheus. Age, birth conditions, goals almost coincide. The supporters of atheism came to the conclusion that such a person as Jesus of Nazareth never lived on our planet. He was invented by theologians and other interested persons.

Adherents of the Christianity believe that such a striking similarity arose as a result of the confusing of the facts, the introduction of new cultures and the mistaken analogies. But scientists agree that the most plausible facts about Christ are that he was born, baptized and crucified. Everything else could be borrowed from neighbors.

2. Mythology = religion

Recall the wonderful book “Myths and Legends of Ancient Greece and Rome”. It is impossible to imagine that the events described in this work could actually take place. The same applies to any other mythology. But, strangely enough, in due time, these beautiful fairy tales were perceived as an irrefutable truth (religion) by many people. So why cannot the Bible be a collection of folklore? Zeus the Thunderer sitting on Mount Olympus or the Scandinavian Odin were as real as the Christian God. They were awakening the fear, they were worshiped. So what’s the difference? If you carefully study the ancient cults and beliefs, it becomes clear that the Abrahamic religions did not bring the concepts of monotheism and salvation. All this existed long before their occurrence.

3. Biblical values do not coincide with modern ones

We all heard that the word of God is infallible and must be observed in every detail. But the Bible itself has a lot of interpretations. In connection with this, new sects and religious trends grow like mushrooms. The text itself is very old and is understood in different ways by different people. A huge temporary abyss lies between the moment of its creation and our days, and hardly anyone will be able to say what exactly the authors of the Holy Scripture meant.

As for the many moral values mentioned in the Bible, no sane person will practice them on his own example: the slavery, the senseless killings of homosexuals and adulterers, the sale of children and other things which are not only unacceptable in modern society but also dangerous for life and freedom. Maybe, 2000 years ago, all this was quite normal, but today, the picture has dramatically changed. So does it make sense to say that a true Christian can bravely bring justice to the world by following the letter of the biblical law?

4. The Bible is not a reliable historical source

Whether there was Jesus on the earth is not the only topic for disputes between believers and atheists. Let’s take the story of Noah and the World Flood as an example. Evidence of the scale of this natural disaster has survived in the annals of different cultures of that time. In most of the sacred books, there are heroes who bravely saved themselves and others from the raging water and then revived life on Earth. It’s hard not to notice that all descriptions are too reminiscent of each other.

Let’s draw conclusions. Someone could well have borrowed history. With time, it lost authorship and homeland. So, it cannot be reliably ascertained what part of the world was flooded and which of the righteous built the ark.

5. Religion was the source of many bloody conflicts

Listening to the news in which another bloody drama with massacres is mentioned, the skeptic will think: “How does God allow such things on his land?” Looking through the history textbook, you will immediately notice that the most sophisticated and bloody crimes were covered by the name of God. Many people fell in the so-called Crusades, the purpose of which was ephemeral, not entirely fair and generally very doubtful.

What is most outrageous, even young children were engaged in military-religious campaigns. Yes, there was such a shameful fact in Christian history. In May 1212, about 25,000 kids and adolescents rose under the sacred banner. The event was called the “Children’s Crusade” and was held under the patronage of the Franciscan Order. Wise men decided that the sinless children will succeed in what the adults failed to do. In addition, few people would attack a defenseless kid. Everything ended sadly enough.

In the case of such global events, there are simple biblical truths intended for execution: “do not kill”, “turn the other cheek”. There is no need to talk about totalitarian sects, whose interpretation of the Bible is so original that their adepts joyfully jump from the roofs, burn themselves at the stake, and all in the name of the Lord.

6. Science answers the eternal questions

Indeed, we no longer fall on our knees and do not cry to heaven when we see a lightning or a flying comet. Most of the incomprehensible phenomena have long been explained by science. Our valiant researchers managed to decompose into molecules, to explain intelligibly and simply such issues that were previously considered a divine mystery. It seems that soon, there will be no place for God in the world of modern technology.

Scientists successfully invaded in human DNA, thus showing that there is no limit to human curiosity. They flew into space – God was not met there. For many people, this is enough to be disappointed in the usual religious concepts. The universe gradually ceases to be a mystery.

Thus, it is reasonable for educational institutions to devote more time to science and not to religion. The modern world needs advanced youth who can master innovative technologies. The students themselves are well aware that the Internet and online writing services are much more helpful for achieving the academic success than prayer.
