Society tends to not be such a kind place. Two public figures who know this all too well are iconic rapper Snoop Dogg and Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton. While he has identified as Crip and is famous for his gangsta rap persona, Snoop Dogg has been labeled a “thug,” regardless of the fact that he has transcended his previous life and helps California children get to college through his Pop Warner football team. Critiques think Cam Newton is “cocky” because he smiles a lot and he has also been labeled a “thug” because he dabs in the endzone, regardless of his continued excellence on the football field and many acts of kindness towards struggling children. It will be hard to hate on either after their charitable acts during the Thanksgiving holiday. Collectively, Snoop and Newton have seen to it that thousands of disadvantaged people will be able to partake in a sumptuous meal this Thanksgiving in their respective locales.
Snoop touched the masses in Inglewood by passing out more than 1,500 turkeys to families this past Thursday at the LA Forum. This is the second annual Thanksgiving Turkey Giveaway that Snoop has overseen for Inglewood families. In addition to passing out the gobblers, Snoop took over 800 people with the grateful recipients.

Yesterday, on the other side of the nation, Cam Newton fed about 900 children during a festive celebration at a Charlotte Boys & Girls Club. Through his charity, The Cam Newton Foundation, Newton has put on his Thanksgiving Jam every year since his entrance into the NFL as the No. 1 pick in 2012. The Thanksgiving feast was complete with a “dabbing” contest, where children mimicked the dance that he has become known for. He told the Charlotte Observer: “When I see kids doing a dance, whether it’s the Dab, the Nae Nae, the Twist, the Harlem Shake, the list goes on … that type of energy can’t be matched. And that’s what people don’t understand that critique the negativity about it. It puts a smile on my face, and you can’t ask for much more.”

Of the Thanksgiving meal, Newton said: “To see the kids, to see the parents, and to share a plate, a moment, a conversation with them is always beneficial for both parties.”

Surely the haters, in their persistence, will find a way to hate on these two for putting on for the unprivileged. It is just refreshing to see influential people use their means to help the less fortunate. Salute!
