Video of Tennis Star James Blake Being Slammed By The NYPD
In the era of Black Lives Matter, police across the nation seem to not be receptive to the notion that Black folks are worthy of their respect. one of the latest incidents to take place was the assault of tennis star James Blake at the hands of the notorious NYPD. The police mistook the former fourth-ranked player in the world for a suspected identity thief as he waited for his ride to the U.S. Open outside of the Grand Hyatt in Manhattan. He was slammed to the ground and handcuffed.
NYPD Commissioner William Bratton reportedly talked to Blake on the phone. He said of the conversation, “I spoke to Mr. Blake a short time ago and personally apologized for yesterday’s incident. Mr. Blake indicated he would be willing to meet with the Internal Affairs Bureau as our investigation continues. Additionally, he said he would be returning the Mayor’s earlier phone call to speak to him. Mr. Blake said he would like to meet with the Mayor and me at a future date, which we would be agreeable to.”
Apology aside, Blake is justifiable miffed about the situation. According to ABC7:
James accepted Bratton’s apology, but said he will not be satisfied until the officers are held appropriately accountable and there is a commitment from the city to make a meaningful financial investment into supporting communities that are affected by these types of incidents. He said he would also like to see a financial investment into protecting the public from excessive police abuse.
