A Look At Mandela’s Life At The Victor Verster Prison

Yesterday (February 11) marked the 28-year anniversary of Nelson Mandela’s release from Victor Verster Prison, after spending 27 years of a life sentence for conspiring to overthrow the state. It’s an image that has been etched into South Africa’s collective memory. Nelson Mandela walking out of prison for the first time after 27 years, hand in hand with former wife, Winnie, and raising a clenched fist. Twenty-eight years later, in what the ANC has declared the year of Nelson Mandela, we look at the late former President’s life at the Victor Verster Prison – now called Drakenstein, where he spent his last years of imprisonment.
