“What To the Slave Is the Fourth Of July?” by Frederick Douglass
Today is the Fourth of July. There has been much talk on social media about whether or not Black folks should celebrate Independence ay. Some believe that America’s history of oppression towards Blacks should discourage brothers and sisters from celebrating anything today. Renowned abolitionist and freed slave Frederick Douglass felt this way. In this speech given in Rochester, NY, in 1852, he made his feelings about the day known.
