The Netflix series Narcos exposed many to the supposed life and career of Colombia’s “King of Cocaine,” Pablo Escobar. While Escobar’s popularity has grown with the show, there are still folks in Colombia who despise the deceased drug lrd and everything he stood for. Rap superstar Wiz Khalifa learned this the hard way after a trip to Medellin (the namesake of Escobar’s Medellin Cartel) to perform at a festival.
Wiz took photos at the grave of Pablo Escobar paying homage and posted them to Instagram. Though many of Wiz’s fans liked the pics, Colombians were not happy about it and let the emcee know. “Colombians aren’t proud as you are of a murder and narco like Pablo Escobar. Show more respect. Colombia isn’t Pablo Escobar,” tweeted one angry Colombian.
The mayor of Medellin also chimed in, suggesting that Wiz is now banned from Medellin. “That scoundrel, instead of bringing flowers to Pablo Escobar, he should have brought flowers to the victims of violence in this city,” said Mayor Federico Gutierrez, according to the Kansas City Star. “He must offer an apology to the city.” The mayor added that Wiz is “not welcomed” back.
Wiz did apologize via IG stating, “Didn’t mean to offend anyone with my personal activities in Colombia but I’m glad we came and got work done and everyone was safe. Peace and love.”
Will that be enough to get Wiz back in Medellin? We’ll see. Check out the photos in question below:
